The owners of this house in Duddingston, Edinburgh, came to us looking to improve their existing kitchen. The kitchen was in a single storey offshoot to the rear of their Victorian house. It was dark, low ceilinged and cold, and did not take advantage of the view towards Arthur’s Seat. The original brief was to adapt the existing structure but it soon became apparent that this was in poor condition. The structure was therefore rebuilt, with highly insulated walls, floor and roof. The roof pitch is exposed internally to increase the sense of space and light. The fully glazed gable not only brings in light but frames the views to Arthur’s Seat. French doors give access to the garden via a new raised deck. The opening to the adjacent breakfast room was increased to bring more light into the space, and to maximise sightlines through the house.
