Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade I, New Build, Sited in AONB
The Convent is a Grade 1 'folly' that historically formed part of the carriage ride route from Stourhead House up to King Alfred's Tower, through the woods. Tucked into a secluded setting down forest tracks, the building had been rescued from near ruin in the 1980s, by then privately owned on a long lease from the National Trust. We were commissioned by new owners in 2017 to carry out a complete upgrading of the by then 'tired' fabric, including all the services and the replacement of the generator 'shed'. Works involved re-thatching and re-roofing, amendments to windows, external repairs and reinstating the original stone chimney tower stack which allowed the installation of a woodburning stove. The shed was replaced with a new purpose built 'cabin' that was designed to sit recede quietly into the vegetation, perched up on the sloping ground behind the house. This provided guest accommodation and a work bolthole to find moments of peace in the busy family home whilst looking out over the forest from the vantage point. Below the upper level, a greenhouse served the working kitchen garden tucked behind the laurel hedging. With the site completely regraded to the the rear of the house, opening up the constricted rear of the house with new steps and landscaping giving improved access around the fairy tale oasis.
