New Build, Within a Conservation Area
4 Downley Avenue , Bradwell Common , MILTON KEYNES , Buckinghamshire , MK13 8DE , United Kingdom
The Studio on the Green, Loughton, Milton Keynes: In April 2011, we were invited to discuss the possibility of building a new energy efficient private art studio in the garden of a converted barn for keen amateur artists John and Pam Walker. The project was challenging due to: • The site and its historic setting in a conservation area. • The Clients’ desire for a highly sustainable solution. • The underground sewer discovered under the development area. The art studio was designed to PassivHaus standards and incorporates the following sustainable systems/features: - Passive solar control, optimising free heat gains when required, - 16 panel 4kW photovoltaic array with the ability to export energy to the grid. - A mechanical ventilation/heat recovery unit, (MVHR), - Very high levels of insulation, wind tightness and air tightness, with minimal thermal bridging. - Triple glazing throughout. - Rooflights of the highest possible thermal efficiency. - Rainwater harvesting. - Green Guide A-rated materials. - High thermal mass. - Very low energy lighting systems including LED luminaires. We delivered a well day-lit open-plan art studio that allows them to enjoy their creative hobbies, and sit in comfort enjoying both their garden and the surroundings across the adjacent Loughton Brook.
