This multifaceted project added another layer of history to a site with a rich heritage spanning over one thousand years. Originally a place of defence, designed to keep invaders out, it then became a prison, for incarceration. ADP designed a masterplan for the site, and executed the detailed design of the majority of the scheme. New public routes and urban spaces have been created, to connect the site into its urban setting, in the historic centre of Oxford. Careful restoration and conservation work to the listed buildings and scheduled ancient monument have been combined with sensitive conversion work and new build insertions to create a vibrant social and cultural quarter, boasting a new Malmaision hotel, restaurants, bars, galleries, apartments, visitors’ centre and museum. Completed to critical acclaim, the project has been recognised by widespread publicity and 15 awards, including an RIBA National Award, Civic Trust Award, RICS ‘Project of the Year’, and international recognition at MIPIM.
