Hallmark House is one of two of the largest buildings on the East side of Johannesburg CBD. An icon of the Joburg city skyline, the 66-metre-high modular structure was originally designed by Greg Cohen in the late 1970s to house a growing diamond-polishing business. Flexible and modular in structure, it was versatile enough to house light-industrial, showroom and office spaces. Adjaye Associates’ reinvention of the building will offer a new residential tower that will contribute to the ongoing regeneration and transformation of Johannesburg’s CBD as part of the Maboneng development. Meaning ‘place of light’, Maboneng is a privately developed urban neighbourhood on the east side of the CBD. It has become a thriving mixed-use community within a connected urban environment. Hallmark House will accommodate expansive residential apartments, an all-suite luxury hotel, and a mix of health, wellness and leisure facilities. The multimillion-rand development, positioned to become the most enviable address on the African continent, is scheduled for completion in 2017. The project aspires to merge art, design, culture and architecture to appeal to a variety of human needs. Central to the African aesthetic is a modern, high quality material palette, with interiors reflecting the lines and silhouettes of the surrounding urban metropolis. The development will be home to luxury apartments with floor-to-ceiling views of the city, situated above a secure access-controlled multilevel parking garage and a ground-floor retail space. Designed to rival apartments in similar neighbourhoods around the world, with interior-exterior layouts that frame the surrounding cityscape and iconic Joburg skyline, the apartments range in size from 35m² to 270m² , and are available as studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom options, with different-sized terraces and large balconies. Hallmark House will also have an on-site spa, fully-equipped gym and swimming pool, and a Rooftop Bar, situated alongside an outdoor cinema.
