Our brief was to provide dormitory accommodation for 64 fifth year girls on the site of an existing tennis court. The underlying design concept was the desire to make each room equal and therefore the "the best room". All were to be the same size, enjoy the same views and have the same facilities. Oak seating positioned within full height bay windows make the most of views and provide a relaxing space within each bedroom. The bays enjoy afternoon and evening sunshine creating a place to sit, read or chat with room mates. External oak screens suspended from the façade lend a degree of privacy and provide solar shading to the bedrooms below. The building layout separates ‘work’ from ‘home’ with study rooms placed on the east façade overlooking a quiet and contemplative hidden garden. The garden also provides a focal point for the glazed staircase.
