The original Red Lion was a closed, tired timber frame Essex pub with no redeeming features. From this kernel we generated a large restaurant and bar together with a small boutique hotel. The success of this project lies with the integration of landscape and the new buildings together with a client, who was fully engaged with the design process. Built around a landscape courtyard, the new building is constructed almost entirely of oak above a brick plinth with some render creating an entirely new entrance axis. The large building integrates into this landscape as if it has always been there. This boutique hotel hosts a 200-cover restaurant, with private dining space, and 15 individually designed guest bedrooms. Following its huge success, a conservatory was added to the west terrace adding an additional private dining room or extension to the restaurant Subsequently we have completed Phase II, consisting of 8 additional guest bedrooms, a large banqueting suite and other supporting facilities. This expansion follows the precedent of the original design with subtle choice of materials and excellent landscaping.
