Completed September 2011, The HUB Building at Edge Hill University creates dining, retail, social learning, students union and offices spaces for, students and visitors at the heart of the University Campus. It links in with original university building, which provides reception areas, offices, halls of residence and restaurant facilities, with areas being re-organised and refurbished as part of the works. Its fluid form and position in the campus enable it to be a highly permeable building, offering a sheltered route in times of bad weather. The copper clad drum of the fluid new build element intersects with areas of the refurbished original 1930’s building. Double height spaces and north lights fill the building with light, highlighting features of the original building where old and new interact. The building is designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent and incorporates low energy features such as very high levels of insulation, LED lighting, heat recovery from ventilation systems and solar thermal hot water supply. The spaces are flexible, designed to allow a range of university events to take place with furniture and technologies being updated when required and in response to the way students utilise the spaces.
