New Build, Within a Conservation Area
With rooms for 240 students, the scheme consists of 11 linked blocks. As the site falls partly within a conservation area, the buildings relate in scale and materials to the late Victorian semi detached houses adjacent to the site, but with a contemporary interpretation. The buildings are clustered around a series of spaces where existing trees and mature planting have been retained with minimal hard landscaping. Each student room forms part of a six or eight unit flat, sharing a kitchen and social area. Large areas of glazing create light, welcoming rooms. Very high levels of insulation and triple glazed windows reduce heat loss. Hot water is provided through a combination of solar thermal panels supplemented by combined heat and power units. These measures, combined with Internal lighting controls, the use of LED?s and energy use displays in each flat will reduce energy demands to a minimum.
