Within a Conservation Area
This 1950s Californian Case Study style house was in desperate need of restoration. Poor construction meant the existing flat roofs and lower ground retaining walls were leaking. Previous owners had made alterations to the house with Georgian carriage lanterns and while the clients liked the modernist approach, they didn’t like its stark harshness. The clients appointed us to introduce a master bedroom suite and entrusted us with the challenge of making their home to feel warm and welcoming. The building was stripped back to its bare structure shell and the house was transformed, using cutting edge materials. The lower ground floor was extended to add a new bedroom, enhancing the lines of the existing dwelling. The glazing at the back of the house was re-designed to blur the boundaries between inside and the outside yet still capturing dramatic views of the Devil’s Punchbowl. The result is a stunningly beautiful, warm, light, and inviting modern home.
