A contemporary extension and internal remodelling of a Victorian terrace house to make it suitable for modern family life. The design creates a coherent ground floor plan that cascades over the site’s drop in level and rationalises the layout of the living spaces in the deep, narrow building footprint. Light is drawn into the heart of the plan, and a hierarchy of spaces make best use of the available area. The design has been prepared with particular regard to the site’s Victorian heritage and for the protection of its neighbouring environment. The pitched roof references the Victorian roofscape, and allows for low party walls to the neighbouring properties. Subtle brick detailing references the polychromy decoration of the Victorian facade.
