New Build, Within a Conservation Area
Located on a compact and challenging site within the Unthank Conservation Area, this contemporary, open plan dwelling is perfect for unwinding at the end of a busy day or entertaining friends and family at weekends. A single-storey 'day' wing comprising the kitchen, living room and dining area connects via a bespoke oak staircase to a two storey bedroom wing. The ground floor of which is sunk by 1m into the earth, creating an unusual split level design and simultaneously reducing its external massing. The considered use of a palette of render, cedar cladding and polished blockwork helps to define and express the composite elements of the design. An extensive sedum roof brings additional greenery into the site and provides a much needed sanctuary for bees and other wildlife. High level clerestory windows in the first floor bedrooms bring in high levels of natural light whilst also maintaining privacy and minimising overlooking. Meanwhile, ancillary spaces such as a large pantry and cloakroom are discreetly accessed via secret doors contained within a bookcase and kitchen cabinet that adds a whimsical twist but also helps to preserve the visual continuity of the open plan living area, much desired by the owners.
