Warm minimalism: Substantial refurbishment and extension of family home in Chiswick. The common spaces are lined with cherry veneered units for display and storage which create a series of vistas toward the park-like garden. A minimalism borne of detail and line, the interiors become a warm and quiet back drop against which the clients' personality can be expressed. With a collection of contemporary furniture and glassware, a love of throwing parties and two children, the client’s needed open plan flexible space with plenty of storage rather than the traditional arrangement of small rooms off a central corridor. The oversized cabinet separates the dining, living and cooking spaces whilst also displaying the client’s glass collection. Doors, which can be concealed within the cabinetry, allow the spaces to be either connected or separate. The extension to the rear affords a panoramic view of the garden through two huge sliding glass doors. The garden is laid to turf with treess, giving the impression of being in the park. Subtle warm colours offset the cherry, oak and steel give the design simplicity and quietness. Upstairs, new bedrooms and bathrooms clip onto the veneered core. The glassware, paintings and pod lamps by Ross Lovegrove hanging like fruit in the garden provide accent colours. This is a warm minimalism, each material and detail carefully conceived.
