Restoration and extension of a substantial 1960s house, located in a desirable village in Buckinghamshire. The existing house had been extended a number of times in the past which had led to a disjointed plan layout and untidy elevations which lacked clarity and articulation. The house occupies a prominent position within the village, but currently presents a substantial area of hardstanding to the streetscape. As well as working with the internal layout to add order, logic and delight to the spaces, our client was also keen to improve the kerb appeal of the house, by resolving both the disjointed elevations and strengthening the relationship of the house to its site, and blurring the transition from internal to external space. Elevationally, new elements were introduced to the massing of the building to restore order and add drama to the composition. These include a first floor gabled extension clad in Pigmento Rouge zinc, and at ground floor level the introduction of colonnaded walkways which wrap the base of the building, emerging from a terraced and landscaped base to support a planted roof and provide covered access and incidental spaces around the house, softening the transition from inside to out. The scheme has now received Planning Consent and is due to start on site Autumn 2021.
