The original premises consisted of a rather dilapidated and outdated bar and club with a varied clientele for both age and sexuality. With this in mind Admiral Taverns briefed @ architect ltd to design a scheme to refurbish and reliven this building to address the current market and provide a true venue for the area. This is the only licensed venue in town open after 5am and being one of the few places in the area to cater for gay people the retailers were keen to retain this market but realised that the existing décor was outdated and needed to refurbish in order to promote the premises etc.. One of the major points for the design was the decision to have unisex toilets which very much provided a centre piece for the surrounding space. The use of glass and structure ensures that there is privacy whilst still retaining the feeling of openness. Other parameters of the scheme were to move the entrance point of the building, provide a more welcoming entrance lobby and to lead people around the space. The rationalizing of the circulation spaces enabled us to form a specific area for dancing and a main bar that is visible from the entrance but that is not too overpowering as you enter. The dance area is located on the ground floor but the DJ booth is located on the first floor. Originally this was positioned in such a way that it was difficult to even see the dance floor. We worked closely with the DJ and repositioned the booth so that it looked down over the dance floor. The high points of the first floor are the fixed seating, the additional bar and the feature wall which displays the ‘Route 69’ logo. We also formed a new extension to the first floor to provide an additional bar area and external terrace area – this allowed management options of how to use the space to provide the flexibility of using this area as a separate wine bar. The scheme was briefed in March 2007, costed in April, and after tendering and negotiations started on site in August 2007.. The overall scheme was completed in November 2007 with a cost of £370,000 The interior uses a blend of colours and finishes to create a club and bar that has both a friendly atmosphere whilst providing a little zing to the area.
