Listed Building - Grade II

Practice

Finkernagel Ross Architects

221-222 Shoreditch High Street , London , E1 6PJ , United Kingdom

This exquisitely detailed contemporary extension to a Grade II listed detached London property is built almost entirely of glass and topped with a crisp marble-clad canopy which appears to float, allowing a clear view of the rear of the original Arts and Crafts house. The delicate and dematerialised enclosure houses a new family kitchen and dining area where sliding doors and frameless roof lights maximise daylight and blur the distinction between inside and outside space. Beyond, a John Soane inspired timber-paneled ante room creates an effortless transition between the listed building and the modern glass extension.
