The client wanted to build a garden room to enjoy a fine broad garden and to study and entertain in, along with linking
into a new kitchen reorganised with entertaining, new laundry room, short steps and w.c.
We designed a building as if it was furniture; a glass coffee table in macro as if garden furniture, transforming the scale and relationship of the house to garden and converting the kitchen into a more open and
The brief was to maintain the spirit of the existing house yet at the same time, to inject a, fresh, modern feel, catch natural light and garden views and open the kitchen-dining-entertaining up to the landscape beyond.
The building itself is a perfect square made up of four equal cubes. The square is reflected in all new parts of the floor plan and comes from the square of the existing house plan, the double square of the garden with it’s lateral afternoon light.
The support is formed from stainless steel miesian detached columns supporting the centre of each perimeter edge allowing the corners each to be cantilevered, this frees the corners for a glass only junction.
